Salt Water is good for the wood but bad for metal. Rain washes the salt from the rig but rots the wood. Sun lifts the spirit but degrades the fabrics and wood. And chafe, chafe is the enemy.
So we serve, tar, oil, paint, make baggywrinkles, sew on leather, repair sails, replace lines, clap on new seizings. Step on board Tres Hombres on any given day and you will find any number of these tasks being carried out, all for the purpose of protecting the ship against that which we are trying to preserve, nature.
We do the work happily though, for the first rule of sailing is to care for your ship. If you do she’ll care for you. The sea sure as hell won’t.
