Tres Hombres Rum Ed. 67 (mini)

Ron Premium Dominicano 18 yrs - 43% vol. 20cl

In stock

This mini version of Tres Hombres Rum Ed. 67 is a Spanish rum that has followed a triple maturation process of column distillation. Originally from the Dominican Republic, this rum was blended and aged by Bodegas Oliver.

Origin and distillation

After the triple maturation process and sufficient time, Porto Tawny, Calvados and Cognac barrels perfected this Caribbean distillate during the journey home. Nearly 5,000 miles of sailing across the North Atlantic has added enough adventure to give this rum a signature “Tres Hombres” worthy finish upon arrival in Amsterdam. Because the ship is constantly moving, the Porto Tawny, Calvados and Cognac barrels have intensified the flavor of the rum for an unforgettable aftertaste.

But first is this Tres Hombres Rum Ed. 67, aged for 18 years according to the Solera system. The Solera system originally originated in Spain and is used for various drinks. Of these, Sherry is the most obvious, and balsamic vinegar perhaps the most surprising. In Spanish, “solera” literally means “on the ground.” The barrels are organized into rows from the ground up, with the bottom layer of barrels containing the oldest matured liquid. The next row of vessels is called the first criaderas (or “nurseries”) and contains the intermediate age average and the second criaderas, the highest level in a three-row arrangement, contains the youngest average age fluid. During the year, part of the lower barrels is tapped for bottling. This row is then replenished from the row on top of it, and so on. Finally, the top row is refilled with new product.

What is Spanish Style Rum?

Traditional Spanish Rum, also called “ron”, is mainly produced in Cuba, but also on other Spanish islands such as the Dominican Republic.

Produced from a short fermentation of molasses, this rum is often light and syrupy, which makes it sweeter than an English rum, for example.

Tasting notes

This rum also combines very well with our Tres Hombres chocolate!

Are you a real rum lover? Would you rather drink an even fuller and more powerful rum? You are probably looking for us Captain's Choice Rums!

Design

The drawings on the labels of our 2023 editions were made by a Tres Hombres crew member.

Bottling

Last but not least, this rum is made with the help of the Tres Hombres Team at the Distillery Amsterdam bottled.

Each bottle of rum is sealed with a natural cork and finished with colored beeswax. This makes the origin of the rum easy to recognize by the color of the bottle. To achieve this result, the wax is mixed with color pigments. These are milled from natural raw materials in a traditional windmill in Zaandam.

The story

The life of the brigantine Tres Hombres began in 1943. At the time still without masts and in a wreck-like condition, she was discovered in 2007 by three friends in Delft, the Netherlands. With an incredible amount of diligence and dedication from many volunteers, she was brought back to life. Within just over 2 years we managed to completely restore the ship and convert it into a sailing ship that now crosses the Atlantic Ocean every year, sails the Northern European seas and covers these long transport distances exclusively with the power of the wind.

Route

From Amsterdam to the Dominican Republic and back via the Azores

Map route Tres Hombres

This Tres Hombres rum Ed. 67 was picked up in the Dominican Republic during the winter trip. After the refit is completed in November, the crew will board a ship in Den Helder in tip-top condition. Trainees, and sometimes crew, change occasionally during the various stops made to load cargo or stock up on food supplies.

Loading/Discharging port:

  • Douarnenez, France
  • Baiona, Spain
  • Santa Cruz de la Palma, La Palma
  • Fort-de-France, Martinique
  • Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe
  • Bridgetown, Barbados
  • Boca Chica, Dominican Republic
  • Horta, Azores

Previously used barrels are loaded in Douarnenez and Baiona and later filled with rum from La Palma and the Caribbean islands. These barrels provide an extra special taste that makes the Tres Hombres Rum unique. This Tres Hombres Rum
Ed. 67 is matured at sea in Porto Tawny, Calvados and Cognac barrels.

In Santa Cruz de la Palma, Fort-de-France, Marie-Galante, Bridgetown and Boca Chica the barrels are filled with different types of rum. Other products are also loaded on some islands, such as hot sauce in Barbados and cocoa beans in the Dominican Republic.

The stopover in Horta on the Azores is actually only to stock up on food supplies, but occasionally tea and hand-fished tuna are also loaded there.
