Back on Tres Hombres. We are going from Blankenberge, Belgium, to La Rochelle, France, and then Copenhagen, Denmark.

The first trip to La Rochelle, we had a sunny time on the “sunshine deck”. The wind always got lighter and sometimes we had a lull. In the Channel we looked for one and a half days at the cliffs of Dover and later on we saw for two days the lighthouse on the Île Vierge in North Brittany. We had enough time for maintenance and we took every meal together on deck. 

The sea was calm, there was no seasickness, swimming was possible and it reminded us of a sunny holiday.

The opposite was waiting for us when we were leaving La Rochelle. The two tugboats drew us outside the harbour and then, with the westerly winds, the rolling waves were waiting for us. In the evening, the first trainees got seasick and the others followed the next day. Against the swell we had to go and that was very strong. The weather was not so bad, a little bit colder and windier, with some rain showers.

At the corner of Ouessant we reached the Channel and then we came into grey, misty and drizzly weather. All the clothes were wet. The waves were also high, but we could sail downwind, so it didn’t matter so much. This will be going on for the next few days, which means we will be faster through the Channel than expected.

So the difference between the two trips can’t be greater. That’s life at sea and the experience with the Tres Hombres.
