My name is Krisztián from Hungary and I arrived on board Tres Hombres with my Waldorf teaching (Steiner School, Freie Schule) profession.
Being here gave me an opportunity to be on the other side of the school desk, i.e. as a trainee I can find out what situation children are in at school, where they learn something new every day for several years.
Now I also study, not for several years, but for two months. And what?
At first, you would think it’s only about things related to naval/sailing life, such as parts of the ship, the names of the sails (15.), the names of the parts of the sails, the names of the ropes (nearly 100 pieces), where they are located, which one it belongs to, when I pull, when I ease, the commands, and all of that in English. So the situation of the trainees is not easy, but I don’t think the situation of the other crew members is easy either, i.e. you have to learn/teach all while sailing.
But if that wasn’t enough, I’ve also observed something else in the field of learning: We also learn about the other people on the ship. We get to know each other, I dare say, very deeply during the watch. For example, in addition to telling stories about ourselves, we also played several games that gave us the opportunity to get to know each other. We laughed a lot and were often amazed at each other. Maybe thanks to these situations, I don’t feel any tension between the people on the ship.
I can be sure that if I needed help, I could count on anyone on the ship. If I were in trouble, someone would definitely give me his hand just to save me. Despite the sailors’ saying:
“One hand for the ship, the other for yourself!”
And if that still wasn’t enough to learn, in the end the most exciting thing is that you learn about yourself and thus educate yourself. 15 sailors, at first among strangers, in a foreign environment, in foreign conditions. Moreover, doing all this in a foreign language is not a small challenge. However, accomplishing it is a huge result, an even more powerful experience. For this, one must know oneself and educate oneself! I never thought that this part would be so important.
So, if you want to learn so much, feel free to apply to join the ship as a trainee, you won’t be disappointed!
