De Dominicaanse Republiek is een bekende leverancier van trinitario cacao. De fabrikant Chocolatemakers werkt samen met partner Conacado die een cooperatie die 10.000 kleinschalige cacaoboeren vertegenwoordigd. Samen hebben zij de omslag in gang gezet naar goed gefermenteerde Bio en Fairtrade cacao voor klanten met hoge kwaliteitseisen. Zij hebben over het eiland grote installaties gerealiseerd verdeeld over zeven regio’s waar de cacao naartoe wordt gebracht om daar onder constante kwaliteitscontrole gefermenteerd en gedroogd te worden.
De biologische cacao zorgt voor een goede biodiversiteit op de plantages op een tweetal manieren: het verbetert het organische stof gehalte in de bodem, waardoor het bodemleven op peil blijft en de waterhuishouding van de bodem verbetert (sponswerking van de bodem). Ook vereist het de aanplant van schaduwbomen waardoor er niches ontstaan voor vogels en insecten!
Met de meerprijs worden scholingsprogramma’s en training voor boeren ondersteund en is Conacado een belangrijke speler voor de kleine boeren op de Dominicaanse Republiek.
