Nordlys blog: The cargo-hold will be completely filled

Nordlys had finished the Baltic voyage earlier this year. The ship was loaded with natural wine from France for Copenhagen, Bornholm and Rostock. From there we made a stop in Den Helder and prepared for a southern cargo trip. On our way to Porto we made a stop in Devon, a region on the southern coast of England.

Brixham is a little historic harbor in the Torbay. This is a good bay to shelter for the westerly storms.
Over here we waited till the first autumn storms passed by. Sorlandet,(a Norwegian Tallship) also bounded south,
was at anchor outside in the bay. She was taking shelter, just like us.
While being here, we could do little maintenance on the ship. Caulking, pitching, rigging work and so forth.
Brixham is the home port for several Sailing Trawlers like Nordlys. They do charter-sailing their goal is to bring the people out of the cities and take them into nature.
It was a beautiful view to see Nordlys moored together with these similar traditional sailing ships. With their crews we were able to exchange knowledge about Sailing Trawlers and spending a good time together. Our good friend Tony Knights, skipper of the Leader, was also around and of great help. We had a useful stop and a good time with the sailors from Brixham.

Last Thursday morning we set sail again, since the forecasts showed a good weather window to cross the Bay of Biskay.
Jeroen is the cook on board and providing us every day with delicious food. He supplied our stock with beautiful seasonal products from local farmers and producers. It takes a bit more time, but it is so much better than the supermarketfood. Good food which stays longer fresh, are stored in the galley now. The taste of this vegetables and fruits are just fantastic.

At the moment we are sailing southwards in the Biskay and making a good progress. Next port of call is Porto. This old town is situated on the mouth of the river Douro. Porto and the Douro were of great value in the era of sail concerning in- and export of goods for the country. We will be moored in the Douro estuary and going to charge a well amount of precious goods from Portugal.
We have Olive-oil, Almond-oil, Salt, Natural Wine and Port Wine, to fill our cargo-hold with. These wares are bound for the more northern parts of the European continent, like France, England, Germany and the Netherlands.
We will be able to tell everybody the story of the producers and their way of working.
Fairtransport completes the tale, by the way these products are being transported. The cargo-hold of Nordlys will be completely filled; Almost thirty tons of beautiful products from Portugal we have to move by wind and sail. More and more cargo-owners like to see their goods being transported overseas by sail. They are also willing to pay a little more, for a better cause

Invest in our sailing cargo vessel Nordlys (1873)

The Tres Hombres carved the path for sustainable transport… but this is just the beginning. It is our goal to expand our cargo fleet to include many more ships working under sail. This will diminish delays in our supply chain along the entire shipping line.

The Nordlys, at 48 tons and 25m loa, was recently refitted by Fairtransport. Manoeuvered entirely by the power of the wind she is possibly the worlds oldest cargo ship (1873) still working.
She is at the moment operating in the European coastal trade.  Originally a fishing trawler, nowadays she is able to carry a maximum of 30 tons of wine, olive oil, cider or other goods. Besides that Nordlys will raise awareness about the huge amounts of pollution, created by the modern shipping industry and affect positive change in the way goods are shipped around the world.

The ships in our fleet are owned by shareholders firms. This makes it possible for you to take part as an investor of Nordlys. Already 75% total of the shares are sold.

Nordlys blog: Restoring the (possibly) oldest sailing cargo ship in the world

Like almost any other day I visited sailing cargo vessel Nordlys (1873) at Willemsoord , Den Helder. The ship has been refitted first at Teerenstra Shipwarf and is now lying in the Museum Harbour (http://museumhavenwillemsoord.nl ) getting ready and waiting for her cargo to arrive with her fellow sailing cargo vessel “Tres Hombres”. It is amazing to see what the crew of beautiful Nordlys is doing and has been done.

The bow of the ship has been trough a total rebuild including the focs’l where the crew will stay during the cargo trips in European waters. While sitting in the focs’l it occurs to me that the athmosphere there is tranquille it’s almost like a cosy coocoon keeping you safe from all the work and life on deck and the quay.

The deckbeams and planks have been replaced and a brand new anchor winch is nearly ready. The hull super strong, the galley is made ready,  the rigging is being checked and her crew is in good spirits.

The builders , who do this as volunteers , did and DO a great job and I thank them for making this happen. Restoring the (possibly) oldest sailing cargo ship in the world is in safe hands with them. http://fairtransport.eu/ships/nordlys/

Tres Hombres blog: Fairtransport vaart door, ondanks wereldwijde hack

Op de dag dat de wereldhandel, via Maersk, de grote container rederij, werd platgelegd door internationale hackers, kreeg de Nederlandse duurzame rederij Fairtransport opdracht om met spoed, een van haar schepen naar Frankrijk te sturen met een lading opdracht. Omdat de schoenerbrik Tres Hombres toevallig net in de haven van Den Helder lag, klaar om een grote onderhoudsbeurt te krijgen, kon Fairtransport gelijk inspelen op deze opdracht.

De onderhoudsperiode werd direct uitgesteld, een bemanning van twaalf bemanningsleden en een kapitein werden opgetrommeld, proviand aan boord gebracht, en een lading rum ingenomen. Na enige hoofdbrekens werden agenten en douane bereid gevonden het papierwerk voor de uitklaring van dit duurzame transport te regelen. Ook de eigenaars van de sleepboot Gar waren direct bereid om op korte termijn het motorloze schip, vanuit de Helderse haven, de rede van Texel op te slepen.

Of deze lading werkelijk tot stand gekomen is door lading eigenaren die het vertrouwen in de containervaart verloren hebben, en alleen nog met zeilschepen hun vracht willen vervoeren, wil de kapitein geen uitlatingen over doen. Wel zegt hij: het is duidelijk dat de containervaart langzamerhand zijn geloofwaardigheid verliest. Het is natuurlijk belachelijk dat lading eigenaren alleen naar de prijs van een transport kijken. En niet naar het effect op het milieu, klimaat en leven op aarde voor onze medemensen, kinderen en kleinkinderen.

Ondertussen zeilt de Tres Hombres op de Noordzee met als bestemming Le Havre, Frankrijk. Hier gaat ze een volle lading wijn innemen. Welke weer in Den Helder zal worden overgeslagen op het zeilende vrachtschip Nordlys. Dit schip zal daarna naar Kopenhagen varen. Wie er ook in geloofd dat het tijd is voor een transitie in de transport sector kan zelf meedoen door: te investeren in een van de schepen, Nordlys of Tres Hombres, of voor elk bedrijf die iets vervoert, door de overstap te maken naar zeilschepen. Tres Hombres blog: Fast furious or Rasta rocket ?

For 2 days we saw our Tres going fast without outerjib, bobs and royal sailing closed haul. All safety nets and safety lines are in place, the automatic deck wash was done in the morning with waves and always nothing in the bilges.
Keep your body in balance, hold on as much as you can and walk windward side… Rules, redeem and tasks can be annoying but you understand quickly why this is exist after your first artistic twisted slide magic flip. Crew stayed aware and gave in the warm galley all jokes what they have, all creativity for making little animals with the sourdough, enjoying to furl sails on the bow sprit…
Now, in the same world, mother nature saying relax women and men. Sun on the skin, books in hands, butterflies in the heads, real and psychedelics drawings are done with the melody of guitar… Our bird wearing 11 wings, sailing broad reach, a little taste of Atlantic crossing.
We shared opinions about the new mustard yellow paint and then anyway there is no more old sunny duck yellow paint and we are just happy to see the lady feeling good after years of travels even we were stick on the wet paint at the dinner time when you are arriving sleepy for watch change… Hahaha. Of course many things has to be refresh during the next refit.

Nordlys blog: Epilogue of a Shipyard Winter

Nordlys blog: Cutting through the waves

When we finally came into proximity of our destination, Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight our course on the AIS looked like we had attempted to write “Nordlys was here” in the English channel.
Still mostly drifting around it became clear that if we made it into Yarmouth with the little wind we had we would be stuck there for at least another week. So we headed on in the direction of Brixham to make a short resupplying stop there instead.

Shortly before we reached Brixham harbour however the weather frogs responsible for the grip files seemed to have decided that the everything goes crazy days where over and provided some accurate information for the first time in a long time. The wind would pick up! And really, some hours after this promising message we were to do some real sailing and happily watched Nordlys gracefully cutting through the waves.
Stopping now at the chance of catching up with the schedule was out of the question so our new and for the next days final destination was Portugal.

Ahoy dear Sailorfriends,

It has been a while since some news from the good cargo sailing vessel Nordlys became public. We have been also quite busy over here.

At the moment the Nordlys is on the slipway in Douarnenez. The work on the damage of the collision is being carried out by some companies from Douarnenez. At the moment we are five people on board, and helping as much as we can. The atmosphere is getting a lot better everyday again.

Since the moment we departed from Den Helder, until now, it has been quite an adventure I may say.
Sailing the maidentrip on the completely refitted Nordlys, originally build in 1873, as a captain and crew, is an experience once in a lifetime.

The voyage from Den Helder till Brixham we made an average of seven knots and Nordlys performed very well at sea. In Brixham we could do some caulking, because she was making some water. This all normal for an old lady like Nordlys.

After two years of refit and a wharf time in between, all the planks have to settle themselves. This is only possible in the first waves at sea. To make a stop underway for caulking and checking the underwater ship was all planned. Sailing along the coast I had different harbors already in mind.

Brixham was although the best and most beautiful harbor to make a stop, since the Nordlys originally as build at the English south coast. A lot of people came by and were happy to see Nordlys and we very interested in her life story. An old fisherman called Jim, came by and could confirm she was built in 1873 at the wharf in Yarmouth. According to this man, Nordlys was most probably not built as a trawler but as a trading ship. He is having access to the ships registration lists from the old days and is going to find out more on the history of the Nordlys.

The weather was good to continue our trip to Douarnenez for unloading the rum and so we did. We noticed the ship was making a lot less water than before and we were proud of ourselves, and the work we had done. Nordlys was sailing beautiful. When we passed Ile d’Ouessant, we had to sail full and by and were tacking all the way into the Bay of Douarnenez. It was above my expectation how close to the wind Nordlys can sail. We did not even had the jib flying in the reasonable calm weather we had at that time.

Saturday evening we arrived close to Douarnenez . Monday the tugboat was available for us to bring us to port. I decided to drop anchor in an official anchor place, about one and a half mile from the coast. Also I had contact with VTS Cross Corsen about our anchoring.

Since this was the first time using the anchor I didn’t want to be to close to land. The anchor was holding good. Sunday there was a sailing regatta of 4’20 s and optimists in the bay. This was a nice spectacle to view and we enjoyed a nice and calm Sunday.

Next day the tugboat would come in the afternoon. We were all prepared and excited to go in port to unload our first cargo. This was all going to change dramatically next day. Early in the morning I woke up by a big crash, I run out and saw the whole aft ship being destroyed. A fishing boat was close by, heading away from us in the direction of the port entrance. It took a while before she turned around (It took some time to change the autopilot to manual steering as it seemed) and she collided us almost a second time on our bow.

All the crew was now on deck and luckily at the moment of impact, nobody was at the toilet. Nordlys was making water because of the collision and with the pump running, we were being tugged into port by the rescue boat.

The same day we were standing dry on the slipway and first a lot of paperwork had to be done. More than a week has been passed before the actual reparations could begin. I truthfully belief there must be a reason for everything what is happening in life. At the moment I still cannot figure out a reason for this sad story yet. I think we will never now. Anyway; right now we are going to work on Nordlys and make her even better than she already was.

Tres Hombres is also in Dournenez, they are busy loading wine and preparing the ship and crew for the next Atlantic crossing. The presence of Francois and Wiebe, here in Douarnenez, is a big support for me. Thank you friends.

We organized a barbeque underneath the Nordlys for everybody and had a beautiful evening. We had a feast for life and for cargo sailing. We laughed and we cried. We toasted a rum on the Nordlys.

Tres Hombres and Nordlys together in Douarnenez! A little bit different as we all had expected.
