Two blogs in one!

‘-anchoring-

Yesterday morning (Friday, July the 4th) we decided to go on anchor in the beautiful Tor bay just outside of Brixham harbor. We tacked up in the bay in gentle wind and dropped anchor at 11h30. Shortly after we had the visit of Tony who saw us arrive and came meet us outside of the harbor. We squared away the deck and furled the sails before lunch. Some of us decided to stay on board to watch the ship while the rest of the crew would go on land and enjoy the evening in Brixham.

After a long anchor maneuver, we finally left Tor Bay sailing downwind towards Berry Head. Just after that we trimmed all the sails for a close hauled and sailed out in the English channel Towards France.

-report of the onshore activities by Tom, the third mate-

The lucky shore crew were brought to Brixham in the dinghy by our strict but fair stuurman Steven, who gave us the instructions not get smashing drunk and stay away from the fair maiden in town. My main purpose of the shore visit was to get a nice shower so after dumping the garbage and recycle stuff in the appropriate bins wewent to the Brixham yacht club. we were welcome to use their facilities and all 8 of us except Wessel took advantage of the warm shower.

Cleanly washed and shaved (Tim went for a complete makeover by shaving off his 2 month beard) we went of to first get pounds out of the wall and then off to the pub. the first beer in 5 days tasted excellent and the next ones followed quickly. Our group sort of lost track of each other so we ended up watching the worldcup match Germany France in separate establishments. after replenishing our supplies at the local Coop we needed to assemble at the jetty again for our return to the Tres Hombres, where we were informed that we would lift anchor early next morning for the continuation of ou leg to Douarnenet.

Happy and grateful for the nice excursion we soon hit our bunks. thanks captain Fieke for your vision to stop over in GB and letting us enjoy a great evening in the lovely town of Brixham.

And another blog!

‘-Tres Hombres i una chica¡-

There is a bit less wind power for the moment, tide isn’t all the time with us but lucky there is a lot of girlpower instead: our captain Fieke and our bosun Signe for example. Who said anything about a woman on board…?

We headed a few times to England again, but the longing French coast brings us back on track.
The short sleeps (4 hours)and wakes (4 hours)are starting to feel as the rocking boat, the bunk sleep becomes an experience even scouting-youngsters cant tip. The crew is entertaining with the Caribbean,Bermuda Triangle stories and the loveletters they spell to each other in Danish and DutchEnglish. The big question on board: IS BELGIAN GOING TO PLAY AGAINST HOllAND? Who won their game in Belgium government-wise?

We`re nearly dropping of the fine wine..

Drifting East-Nord-East

We are slowly drifting East-Nord-East waiting for the forecasted northerly winds. We could arrive tomorrow morning if the forecast is accurate. It is a quiet night so far with some light raining periods.

Third of July. We are in the north of the city of Cherbourg and sailing slowly towards the Atlantic Ocean. The wind is variable in direction and speed and our progress highly depends on the strong tidal streams. The weather forecasts also vary quite a bit as high pressure areas are not that stable and predictable systems.

The closer we get to the center of the English channel, the more cargo ships we see. There are dozens of them, of variable size and shapes, driving this highway of the sea up to the North and Baltic Seas, or down to the Atlantic ocean. Some of them are almost 400 meters long. Next to them we feel small and slow but we proudly carry our organic wine back to France, like a message in a barrel.

After a few days with very little wind, now a nice breese. Tres
Hombres is noticeably enjoying herself. We can take a good look at
huis ter duin (Noordwijk) because we are on an easterly course toward
shore now, before turning S along the coast underway to Terneusen.
Last night when the tide turned from S to N we decided to drop anchor,
so the current wouldn´t drag us back nne into the fairway to IJmuiden.
We were laying anchored amidst a lot of big enginepropelled sisters of
ours. It totally becalmed and the night was very still, the water oily
from lack of wind, like it does not occur very often on the North Sea.
It was very enjoyable sitting outside looking at the sky and smelling
the brownies the starboardwatch were baking for our birthdayboy of
today, Ivo. That is already the second birthday on this trip, Francien
brought homemade pie that she coudn´t eat herself due to the process
of growing some sealegs. Tim philosophically remarked: Usually you
feel bad the day after your birthday, because of the party. You
Francien now feel bad on your birthday without a party. That´s also a
way to save money!
Francien, now totally recovered, celebrated her new lifeyear yesterday
by jumping into the Northsea from the bow of the ship, a cold but fun
experience. unfortunately i´m not 20 years old anymore and must take
are of myself a bit. So water under 20 degrees is only for drinking
and for the fish as far as i´m concerned..
I am having a nice week on board, learning to know the ship and crew.
This week is a perfect opportunity for that: wind, no wind, setting
sails and taking them away, wearing ship, tacking, anchoring, heaving
to, drills. Except that i am suffering from the worst cold i had in
three years, life is pretty good to me on board the good ship Tres
Hombres!

Weblog, Saturday 21th of June.

Hi!

Niks geen smelly -diesel-motor, wat het milieu hoe je het ook wend of keert, ten onrechte kwaad doet;

“Stiekum“ kun je je even “de kapitein“ voelen;

Hee!
Uitsicht all over en even lekker klimmen

Spannend?:)
Ik vind van wel!

Hopenlijk tot siens/lesens/horens!
Liefs, Jenny

Weblog,

Update:

Sunday day 5th

Heading for anchorage just above Petten in 11 meter water. ETA (estimated time of arrival) afternoon. Winds going to be light and variable for the next days turning early Tuesday to the North. Today Sunday is sailors rest day. That means no maintenance duties but just the necessary sail handling. This morning we had our first taste of Tres Hombres Fair Transport coffee. Alan our Italian crewmember repaired our coffee grinder. Love this coffee and its taste! A taste of Freedom!

Best regards from the North Sea,

Captain Arjen van der Veen
