Tres Hombres blog: Thank you Blankenberge for your hospitality

We arrived on a wednesday early in the morning and went on anchor just in front of the entrance of the harbour. Later at four o’clock we were towed by the volunteer run rescue crew of ‘Sterken Dries’ towards our berth.
After a 2 day sail we were already back in safe harbor. The Maritime festival started on Thursday so we had some time to make the ship ready to invite thousands of visitors to experience what life onboard a working vessel really is. Well ‘really’ is a big word. To experience this you got to come and sail along.
The festival had lots of tradition music and shanty groups playing during the day and evening. On Sunday I was invited for a barbecue at Ann van Steenkiste of Curiosithee and her family. She is a Belgians tea master and importer of organic tea and knows everything about tea and the real stories behind the production.
She gave me two books with one of the title ‘de stille kracht van thee’ the silent power of tea. I am going to find out.
By Monday we were ready to set sails again. Today Tuesday we soon will see the English east coast. Wind are expected to be westerlies veering to the North. Next destination is Eyemouth Scotland.

Voyage: Amsterdam to Blankenberge

Its nice to be out here on the Mare Frisium. The once called Frisian Sea that is now called North Sea.
We are on our way to Blankenberge Belgium for a 5 day Maritime festival http://www.havenfeesten.be/ this weekend.
Last night we anchored due to the lack of wind in about a meter water. Than this morning we had to break out the anchor out of the sand and pump the chain back in.
Setting all the sails again the ship soon enough made a good spead of knots with the current with us going South. Now the sun is shiny and our bellies are full.
Although the cook is a little sea sick she was able to cook a great meal and made here amazing sour dough bread. Life is good at sea seeing happy faces.

Tres Hombres blog: Funny drawings we described with our keel all over the channel

After all, the south wind arrives. Gently it sets its wings over us and makes an end to more than 30 days of tacking. A month in which we made many miles nobody pays for, just the hands of the crew which haul and hoist and ease and dowse in any condition and to the rythm of the slight changes in the eastwinds, or due to land under the bowsprit.

Arriving at the continental shelf we received the order to unload some long travelled wine barrels in Douarnenez, which we had to dig out under a few tons of cacao beans, which was great fun with the help of the fine crew of our partners in crime, the Grayhound and Lun II.

Camaret Sur Mer gave us some shelter from an easterly gale where we landed at the pier with a well timed handbreak maneuvre and sailed off again a few days later, together with Grayhound. In ghostly silence we hoisted the sails at the pier and tacked out in direction to Chenal Du Four in a fine race against this incredibly fast pirate ship. After some good tacks we kept hope but at the entrance of the Chenal we saw the beautiful stern of our contrahent and wished them well for the summer season.

Funny drawings we described with our keel all over the channel, France in the morning, England at night, ships all the time, and just behind the line with Greenwich to the north, the wind changed. Slightly ease the sheets, brace back a few centimeters and let her go as she likes it.

Everybody is in great spirit and cannot wait to make fast at the Port of Amsterdam where hopefully some happy faces and cold beers will await us!
But still, when the energy of having completed a voyage of 6 months makes place for life on land, some of us will be thrown out of the comfort of having great food on vast times, work which is prepared and commands which are followed with a will, coming from yourself. Ships life is so out of nature but still so good to the human mind, specially in the speed epoca we live in now. Many will find out later, when they remember the howling winds up at the royal, the nights on remote anchorages, the whales and dolphins, the firts land sights, the foreign people, manners, food and landscapes….. how peaceful and worryless time passes on the ship and how much time one has to think about himself.

It is a life worth living, no matter how long, if its a start or a part of a career. This ship is made for this, to give this experience. Pure and rough, no compromise, not in good times not in hard ones. Alltogether it is more than an experience, but that anybody has to make out for himself. After some rum in the Port of Amsterdam.

Tres Hombres blog: Our majesty herself is clipping along easily with often 10 knots

Our days become shorter, grey and colder. Strange, as we go out of the winter you would think, but coming from the eternal Caribbean warmth, the fast flying clouds and the fresh spray of the wave crests give our voyage a new face. The stories of the Papalagi reach their end, boots come out and get greased, the foxhole is wet, every standing thing on deck is salted down as bacalao, crew as well, already with rings under their eyes…
The sheets are tight in their position, nothing to get without handy-billy. Our majesty herself is clipping along easily with often 10 knots, all sail set, exactly on the great circle route to the Azores.
We will see how long the North Atlantic will allow us to keep this course, but maybe soon the barometer will choose a side and the shifting winds  will call us to the braces to keep our tamed, wild horse heading east.
The next stop, where we all are looking forward to, is the magic Archipelago dos Acores, 800 miles out of Portugal, where we expect the last part of the cargo for the continent, orange pekoe tea, grown on the vulcanic hills of Sao Miguel. And maybe this time we make it out of Peters bar and up the Pico….

Cacao-beans, Rum in barrels, Green coffee and Melasse

Ahoy sailors-friends,

Tres Hombres is at the moment in Dominican Republic.
All the cargo arrived and is stowed properly in the belly of the beautiful sailing-ship.
Cacao-beans, Rum in barrels, Green coffee and Melasse.
All delicious and fair products from this interesting island.
We will sail our way back to Europe, and once again we will proof that transport by sail just works.
All the people on board have so much fun and are working very hard on the cargo and the ship.
Every body is exciting to sail all this products over the Atlantic back home.
First we will make another stop in the Acores to take some more cargo.
At the moment we are ready to set sail, but an intense weather-system is passing by south of Hispaniola.
We will wait till this has passed by to the west and depart when the winds are more in our favour.
I already wrote about the isolated thunderstorms, well over here we have them every day.
We even had a lightning strike on our mast. No damage except for one navigation light, which is all the way on the top.
Indeed it is interesting weather over here in the summer.

“Independent thought produces original ideas and is the key factor by which we progress as a society”

When people begin to think independently again, (like a child does) they become more creative, which means they start having new ideas. Today you can see, how slowly more and more creativity is arising among the people in many different ways.
Governments and big co-operations or banks do not like new ideas, because new ideas represent change. Nowadays in our society, financial wealth and personal ownership seem to be very important. I think that we as a mankind own nothing. It is the earth who owns us. And it is only the money, which is keeping the system we are living in, together.
Financial success is most of the time achieved by exploiting and profiting from other people. This is happening on a global scale and has big effects on our relationship with nature and our social and spiritual understanding of life.
Because of this commercial system, mankind is getting completely disconnected from the earth and from the spiritual understanding of themselves.
The wealth of western nations has been achieved by the exploitation of other countries, which is only possible because of the economic system as it is now.
Lots of people who live in the so-called “third world” countries are still very spiritually connected. They live as it looks to us in poverty, but in fact, they are the most curing, most giving and most supportive people you will ever find. These people have an extremely high quality of life.
Physically they may live on a lower level, but this is only because the so-called “first world” is exploiting this cultures and enslaving them into a commercial system, designed to bring them in scarcity.
The younger generations in these countries with tribal culture do not see all the negative things from the western society, like the pollution that it brings or the spiritual disconnection. They see the world through the smart-phone or the television, which most of the time they do have. It is unbelievable to see they all have the latest model phone.
We have the obligation to save these cultures and not bring them in the same false believe system we as a western culture live in. We can even learn from them to remember. To help the world, we should first of all consume less and the products that we do consume should be honest and fair products. Spend a bit more on the food that you put in your mouth. The wealth should be shared and not be stolen from each other.
Think more independently, become more creative and help the world to spiritually revive. Let us break down the economic system that we live in, right now. Not by protest, but just by creativity.

Na twee weken in Douarnenez geweest te zijn is het tijd verder te trekken. De vaten wijn zijn geladen, de stagen geteerd, de kaarten bijgewerkt, de kisten vastgesjord, de pizza en stokbroden gegeten, de cider gedronken, de stormzeilen uitgeprobeerd, het vrachtruim en zelfs het schijthuis geverft, vriendschappen gemaakt, de muziek gespeeld, het land is geroken. Tijd om de zilte lucht weer in te ademen, zo diep als je kan.

Het is tijd om terug te keren naar die oneindige oceaan. De Oceaan die vele gezichten heeft. De oceaan waar al zo veel over geschreven is, de oceaan die je moet beleven om erover te kunnen praten. De sterrenhemels zijn zo adembenemend dat zelfs de grootste stadslandrot even z’n mond houdt en alleen maar kan staren in de grootsheid.

Er komt wind aan. Je kunt het voelen in de avondlucht. Je kunt het horen aan het geritsel van de herfstbomen rond de baai, ook al versta je de franse taal niet, je kunt het horen aan de toon van het gemompel in de bar aan de haven. Nog maar een dubbele ronde door het vrachtruim en de rest. Alles goed vastgesjord maatje, tijd voor een laatste stokbrood. Kijken over de haven naar de bladeren, we zullen pas weer terug komen als de bomen een lichte groene waas hebben in het voorjaar.

Dag Frankrijk, en hallo oceaan, daar zijn we weer. Rollende over jouw golven, wacht in en wacht uit. Laat de winden ons in La Palma brengen waar de rum al ligt te wachten om door ons meegenomen te worden. Ahoy we komen er aan.
