Today is our first full day underway since leaving Brixham harbour yesterday afternoon. After a week in port, the crew is feeling well rested, a little broke, satiated by gallons of beer and the good times enjoyed ashore. Rearing to go, the lines were cast off and the ship towed out of harbor under the power of her yawlboat and that of a friendly local skipper, Brixham native Tony Knight.
Brixham was a fine place to spend a week while the ‘Irish hurricane’ Ophelia and her companions blew past turning the Channel and Irish sea into maelstroms. The natural shelter provided by the tall headlands kept our ship out of the winds. During the downtime we were able to make some repairs to important ship’s equipment, refresh our provisions and eat what are perhaps the best fish and chips in the world.
A few days in, our sister ship the Nordlys arrived to wait out the weather and for some days we were able to share meals, stories and good times with our other half. At our favorite pub, musicians and revelers alike from both ships staged a foc’s’le music takeover and the barman kindly indulged us to play our music and carry on until closing.
With the weather past and all hands rearing to go, the crew dropped the tow and set the full complement of sails in a few minutes while the ship bobbed off the breakwater during a calm sunny afternoon. After a tack or two in Tor Bay to keep off the shore, the wind filled in very favorably from the south and enabled the Tres Hombres to slip out of the bay and into deeper water. Later in the evening, as if on cue, the wind switched around to the south west and we began to progress towards the English Channel and our route towards Brittany.

After a winter of hard work on the ship, we departed from Den Helder on the twenty-first of July. The cargo hold stacked with the finest organic wines from France.
Nordlys was eager to go back to sea. She has been sailing already for a long time in the Northern European waters. An old lady she is but still loaded with energy. This time we set a northerly course. The most beautiful natural wines from France have to be transported to Copenhagen, Bornholm and Rostock.
To Copenhagen we transport the wine for Sune. Together with Pontus and Sete, Sune is running a wine import business, called Rosforth & Rosforth. Since 2012 we are transporting wine for Sune. The very warm welcome was a feast for life. Delicious food prepared by Mamen, together with the best wines you can imagine.
Wednesday we were unloading the wine and labeling every bottle with a Fair Transport logo. This label is telling the story the bottle. Biological goods, transported by the sails and by the wind.
From Copenhagen we sailed further into the Baltic. Gudhjem is a little old fishing harbor on the north side of the island Bornholm. Over here Maria and Thomas own the beautiful wine-restaurant Provianten. It is located in the truly marvellous harbor of Gudjem. Again, we were having a feast for life. We enjoyed an incredible meal, combined with incredible revolutionary ideas.
The next day we were unloading the cargo, Jens was playing the violin, spectators came by to see this curious happening in this little harbor. Mystical moments we experience when we are underway; at sea and in the harbors we come.
I would like to thank you all for these truly, incredible moments of joy and love. Sune, Pontus, Sete, Mamen and everybody else from Copenhagen. Maria, Thomas,George, Jens and all the others from Gudhjem. Together we start to set the new norm. Away with fast-food chains and stinking ships !
Right now we are in Rostock, delivering the wines for Frank Schollenberger. Television was filming and lots of people came by while we were unloading the freight out of the Nordlys’ cargo hold.
At the moment a yearly sailing festival is happening; Hanse Sail Rostock. Here we can promote our project and inspire people to live another way of living. A way of living which is better for our home. Our home being planet earth.

This is not a story of adventures only. This is more a story of necessity.
The Tres Hombres carved the path for sustainable transport… but this is just the beginning. It is our goal to expand our cargo fleet to include many more ships working under sail. This will diminish delays in our supply chain along the entire shipping line.
The Nordlys, at 48 tons and 25m loa, was recently refitted by Fairtransport. Manoeuvered entirely by the power of the wind she is possibly the worlds oldest cargo ship (1873) still working.
She is at the moment operating in the European coastal trade. Originally a fishing trawler, nowadays she is able to carry a maximum of 30 tons of wine, olive oil, cider or other goods. Besides that Nordlys will raise awareness about the huge amounts of pollution, created by the modern shipping industry and affect positive change in the way goods are shipped around the world.

Like almost any other day I visited sailing cargo vessel Nordlys (1873) at Willemsoord , Den Helder. The ship has been refitted first at Teerenstra Shipwarf and is now lying in the Museum Harbour (http://museumhavenwillemsoord.nl ) getting ready and waiting for her cargo to arrive with her fellow sailing cargo vessel “Tres Hombres”. It is amazing to see what the crew of beautiful Nordlys is doing and has been done.
The bow of the ship has been trough a total rebuild including the focs’l where the crew will stay during the cargo trips in European waters. While sitting in the focs’l it occurs to me that the athmosphere there is tranquille it’s almost like a cosy coocoon keeping you safe from all the work and life on deck and the quay.
The deckbeams and planks have been replaced and a brand new anchor winch is nearly ready. The hull super strong, the galley is made ready, the rigging is being checked and her crew is in good spirits.
The builders , who do this as volunteers , did and DO a great job and I thank them for making this happen. Restoring the (possibly) oldest sailing cargo ship in the world is in safe hands with them. http://fairtransport.eu/ships/nordlys/

TUESDAY WE HAD A MUSTER ON BOARD AT 9AM IN DEN HELDER AFTER THE VERY GOOD MARITIME EVENT. THE IDEA WAS CLEAR: TO PREPARE THE SHIP FOR THE BIG REFIT, IT MEANS TAKING DOWN GAFF, BOOM, MAIN SAIL OF THE MAIN MAST AND MAKE LOOSE THE RIGGING. WELL, NEXT MORNING ANDREAS COMES ON DECK TO SAY: DON’T CUT THE SEIZING WE GONE SAIL, AND THEN HE WAS GONE. HE LEFT US , WE WERE EXCITED. AT 3PM WE HAD CAPTAIN JORNE READY TO GO, IN 1 DAY A FRESH NEW CREW SAID YES…
WE ARE 13 MOTIVATED HUMANS ON THIS SEAWORTHY SHIP AND MORE BECAUSE WE STILL HAVE A PART OF MOTT GREEN ON THE HEAD OF THE FOREMAST, THE FOUNDER OF THE GRENADA CHOCOLATE FACTORY. NICE TO REMEMBER HIM WHEN WE WERE SAILING TOGETHER WITH JORNE TOO AND CREW IN 2012 FROM CARAIBE TO AZORES. On the road again…
Pun ki šipak, how the people in Skradin would say, is the fine ship Tres Hombres again, underway homebound on a rough Caribbean sea. Fully loaded with organic cacao for the Chocolatemakers in Amsterdam, Colombian coffee for Simon Levelt, molasses for Feinbrennerei Simon’s, great Bayan hot sauce, many other specialities from all the places we hit and for sure: precious rum from La Palma, Barbados, Marie Galante and the Dominican Republic, bound to be Tres Hombres limited editions for this year.
Our new trainees arrived soon after us in Boca Chica and so could spend 2 weeks of preparing the ship and loading the cargoes in a relaxed way, getting to know a bit of the local hospitality and the open hearted appearance of the Dominicans. Almost every evening the presidente was shared around on deck, many times with people not noted on the crewlist…also the beach at swimming distance on La Piedra was home of a good barbecue with conversations and acrobatics around the fire. A fine time we passed in Boca Chica, also thanks to the football shirts from our friend Andre from La Paz in Porto.
And the Portwine! Soon it made the round through the authorities that there is an amazing wine onboard of that pirate ship…but where from?
As we age our carefully selected Tres Hombres Rum in our own barrels during the voyage at sea, we also choose which barrels we use. This year, with the help of our friend and client Anton Mann, we could get a number of Port barrels, directly loaded in Porto and still with some Late Vintage Tawny Port inside! Just to keep the barrels wet, as you might know…what a fantastic surprise when it turned out to be the finest Portwine, approved now officially for sailors use.
After filling the barrels at Oliver & Oliver in Santo Domingo, they finally arrived the day before leaving. Rum aged for 18 years in their solera, given the final touch by a Cuban Masterblender, will now move restlessly for months in their wooden houses, where the Portwine penetrated the oak deeply and all the bags of cacao and coffee form an insulation around the barrels so the angels will not drink to much of it. The next surprise will follow the day we open these barrels again…I will let you know;-)
For the meantime you can wish us fair winds and following seas and wait with the greatest expectations for the new cargo from the west, sailing on a good ship with a fine crew,

Sune says this, watching his wife Veronica climbing up the windward shrouds, keeping their kids in control on deck, while we sail gently, with the last sea breeze along the north-eastern coast of Bornholm. The two boys are our youngest trainees yet: Alberto, el macho artesano, always drawing or fishing and constantly having two or more blond girls following him across the rocks, and Marcelo, el mono corredor, climbing up some simpatico human or running high-speed rounds over the whole deck, 20, 30…until he falls asleep on the spot.

Before we even entered the port of Copenhagen Sune already was onboard together with his brother and their bicycles. A short time later many friends and family followed on the tugboat, which had to bring us into the city center and through the bridge onto Knippelsbrogade. And there we were, on a sunny summer day, the boat safely moored and what is waiting for us: a super-lunch made by Pontus and crew, accompanied by so many sorts of wines not to remember, all this under the Knippelsbro-bridge, which gives shelter to Sune’s wine store. Thereafter showers in Christiania, again food prepared by cook, captain and a happy cargo owner… And the good days followed: after unloading an amount of exceptional biodynamic wines and another crew dinner at Sune’s wine bar, we talked about sailing to Bornholm, and when another client with a pallet of wine asked our freight-service to the island, the decision was made: open the bridge and sail for the Baltic!

Family Rosforth accompanied us on the trip to this most eastern place the ship has ever been, installing a camping in the hold between the cargo of wine.
And what a place it is! Hills overgrown with soft green wheat fields and dark woods, bounded at the coastline by steep cliffs which are interrupted by little harbours and farms further up the land. Very light wind, coming from the land made us come up to just about 100m from the land, where we dropped anchor in front of Guljhem, and went in to check port for a berth. The harbor master and Maria, the cargo owner, invited us with all their hospitality and were eager to have us in their magnificent little harbor with just enough place to fit Tres Hombres. In a few minutes the harbor master sent all the plastic away from the stone wall and called us to come in. The dinghy and some ropes did the job and silently we moved in, awaited by a big crowd and immediately hooked up with a band playing on the cargo hatch and a fine BBQ set up on deck with meat to cut! What should I say about Danish hospitality? If you bring them wine you are treated like a king there!!
After almost a week with hundreds of visitors on deck and many wine tasting’s in different places we got rid of the 3 pallets we brought here and made many contacts for cargoes from and to the island. In the same time the day-watch system allowed the crew to leave the port and explore nature a bit, a pleasure I also took my time for, biking over the soft hills of Bornholm.

This lead to some deeper sight into the islands ecosystem and social development. It is like everywhere in our beloved society. The beautiful farmhouses are quiet and empty like after a war, mostly used for residence of city people. The shorelines are crowded with ice-likking and polser-eating tourists, after-midlife-crisis-bands playing daily in front of the restaurants, all brought by fast ferry and plane. This just during July and August, for the rest a big silence and lots of rain cover the little ports. The young population leaves to the capital, where 1/3 of all Danes live. The island is covered by beautiful fields, which are by closer look not that great. A huge mono culture, not just on Bornholm but all over Denmark, feeds millions of pigs to produce meat which is sent out all over the world. More Antibiotics in the ground and in the water than in the local pharmacy. But there is hope… many small organic farmers, breweries, fancy restaurants using local products are coming up, fighting this strange, dead-end development called industrialization, still mostly depending on tourists or rich part time inhabitants. Bit by bit it changes, I think we also made some people think and all in all it was a great time in Bornholm, thanks to Maria, Tom, Sune, the circus and many locals! We will come back with a full hold next year! Back to Copenhagen, where we await a new crew of trainees for the last leg of the voyage to Holland, we sailed onto a free pier in front of a huge, grey concrete kubus and made fast. Still completely wet from the intensive squall, which gave us the right push to reach the town before darkness, a watchman approached us, threatening with police if we would not leave the Maersk pier immediately, engine or not. So we pulled her along, taking care that the stern part would still reach over to their property. TH crew knows what that means. We will do the same when we are the biggest shipping company in the world and their last rusty, empty, shortened containerwreck wants to tie up at the sailing ship pier at Amaliehavn.

Yesterday morning (Friday, July the 4th) we decided to go on anchor in the beautiful Tor bay just outside of Brixham harbor. We tacked up in the bay in gentle wind and dropped anchor at 11h30. Shortly after we had the visit of Tony who saw us arrive and came meet us outside of the harbor. We squared away the deck and furled the sails before lunch. Some of us decided to stay on board to watch the ship while the rest of the crew would go on land and enjoy the evening in Brixham.
After a long anchor maneuver, we finally left Tor Bay sailing downwind towards Berry Head. Just after that we trimmed all the sails for a close hauled and sailed out in the English channel Towards France.

The lucky shore crew were brought to Brixham in the dinghy by our strict but fair stuurman Steven, who gave us the instructions not get smashing drunk and stay away from the fair maiden in town. My main purpose of the shore visit was to get a nice shower so after dumping the garbage and recycle stuff in the appropriate bins wewent to the Brixham yacht club. we were welcome to use their facilities and all 8 of us except Wessel took advantage of the warm shower.
Cleanly washed and shaved (Tim went for a complete makeover by shaving off his 2 month beard) we went of to first get pounds out of the wall and then off to the pub. the first beer in 5 days tasted excellent and the next ones followed quickly. Our group sort of lost track of each other so we ended up watching the worldcup match Germany France in separate establishments. after replenishing our supplies at the local Coop we needed to assemble at the jetty again for our return to the Tres Hombres, where we were informed that we would lift anchor early next morning for the continuation of ou leg to Douarnenet.
Happy and grateful for the nice excursion we soon hit our bunks. thanks captain Fieke for your vision to stop over in GB and letting us enjoy a great evening in the lovely town of Brixham.
