Jorne Langelaan and Arjen van der Veen, both from the Netherlands, and Andreas Lackner from Austria were crossing the Atlantic on the Bark Europa in 2000. They were close friends; the captain nick-named them the Tres Hombres. The trio witnessed gigantic freighters with massive exhaust fumes, following the same route as Europa and wondered why there were no sailing freighters. They couldn’t come up with a satisfying answer, so they took an oath to one day sail freight emission-free. Fifteen years later, their brigantine Tres Hombres is carrying freight across the Atlantic emission-free and doing well enough to justify adding a second sailing vessel to their fleet.
